The National Design Centre (NDC) features a well-equipped workshop complex designed to support product development within the handicraft industry. Located at the Katubedda head office, this facility includes specialized sections for working with red clay, wood, cane and bamboo, jewelry, coir, textiles, and rush and reed. Additionally, the NDC has dedicated spaces for brass, lacquer, and leather crafts at its Nattarampotha branch office in Kandy.

Under the guidance of experienced craft instructors and designers, the workshop facilitates various product development activities tailored to the handicraft sector. This environment empowers artisans to engage in hands-on product creation while utilizing advanced machinery and equipment.

The workshops also offer short-term training programs for individuals aspiring to enter the handicraft industry, equipping them with essential skills and knowledge. Furthermore, the NDC provides technical support, materials identification assistance, consultations, and other resources to university students, researchers, and business organizations interested in pursuing product development projects.

Through these initiatives, the National Design Centre plays a crucial role in fostering innovation and supporting the growth of Sri Lanka’s handicraft industry.
